What Does Health Connect Actually Sync?
Health Connect is Google's shared store for health and fitness data on Android, and Garmin writes to it directly once a user turns the connection on in the Garmin Connect app. The transfer only runs one way. Garmin sends data out; it does not read anything back in, so nothing another app writes to Health Connect ever reaches a Garmin device. It also needs Android 14 or newer, and nothing moves until the person signs in and grants the permission by hand.
What crosses over is the ordinary daily stuff: steps, active and total calories, distance, elevation gained, heart rate, cycling cadence, speed, swim strokes, sleep stages, weight and body fat. Workouts arrive too, tagged with their type, duration and distance. What stays behind is everything Garmin calculates rather than measures: Body Battery, stress score, training load, training effect, intensity minutes, and running power and cadence. Those are Garmin's own interpretation of the raw sensor readings, built by an algorithm Garmin has no reason to hand a competitor, so Health Connect carries the inputs and leaves the verdict where it was calculated. It is also an Android-only route: Health Connect does not exist on iPhone, so there is no equivalent one-tap sync for anyone on iOS.
The numbers that do arrive land as daily figures, and they read the same way a daily weight reading does: most of a single day's swing is noise, and the number worth trusting is the week, not this morning. A day where Health Connect shows an unusually low step count or a strange sleep total is more often a sync hiccup than a real change, and it is worth a second look at the source app before it gets treated as data.
The Full Account Export: Everything, Once
Garmin's own account settings include a request for the full data export: every activity, every wellness reading, every setting Garmin has ever stored for that account, packaged as a zip file of the original FIT data plus summary tables. It usually takes a day or two to arrive rather than showing up instantly, because it is being assembled from the whole account history rather than pulled live. This is the only one of the three routes that includes the proprietary scores Health Connect leaves out, since it is a dump of Garmin's own database rather than a translation into a shared format.
The cost is that it is a snapshot, not a pipe. The archive is accurate for the day it was generated and starts going stale the moment a new run gets logged. It is the right tool for a full backup, a genuine switch away from Garmin, or someone who wants to parse raw FIT files by hand and doesn't mind writing the code to do it. It is the wrong tool for anything that needs to stay current. A single activity can also be pulled without waiting for the whole archive: the export menu on any individual activity in Garmin Connect offers the original FIT file, or a TCX or GPX conversion, on the spot.
The archive is also the one route that closes a gap nobody noticed at the time, rather than one that has to be caught the day it happens. A maintenance-calories number measured across several weeks tolerates one missing sync inside a live feed without much damage, because the average absorbs it. A three-month hole in wellness history because a phone was replaced and a login was never reconnected is a different kind of gap, and the archive is what closes it after the fact, once, rather than preventing it from happening again.
Sync Partners: Training Files Close to Real Time
Services such as Intervals.icu, Strava and TrainingPeaks connect through Garmin's own Activity API, the same channel Garmin documents for outside developers. Once a user authorizes the connection, each new activity becomes available to the partner service shortly after the watch itself finishes syncing to Garmin Connect, and it arrives as the full training file rather than a handful of summary numbers: heart rate, pace, power where a meter is attached, cadence, elevation, the GPS track. That is a meaningfully deeper copy of a workout than Health Connect ever passes through, because a training platform is asking for the file itself instead of a small set of standardized fields.
Whether the wellness side comes along too, sleep, resting heart rate, Garmin's own readiness scores, is not a fixed answer. It depends on which fields the specific integration asks Garmin for, and that is worth checking in the service's own settings rather than assuming it matches what Health Connect does or doesn't carry. Once a training file lands somewhere else this way, it usually sits in that platform's own log next to sessions typed in by hand, the same shape it would take in a training log built to hold both kinds of entry.
What Gets Left Behind, Route by Route
Health Connect keeps Garmin's calculated scores inside Garmin's own app and passes through the raw daily numbers underneath them. The account export is complete on the day it is generated and gets less useful with every day after, because nothing about it updates. A sync partner keeps the training file's real detail, heart rate through GPS track, but usually still leaves the same Body Battery and stress numbers behind unless that specific integration goes out of its way to ask for them.
None of the three actually hands another company Garmin's interpretation of the data. What moves is closer to the raw signal that interpretation was built from, because that interpretation is Garmin's own intellectual property and staying inside Garmin Connect is exactly where it is designed to stay. Completeness for a single day matters less here than it sounds: a gap in what other apps can see rarely means the underlying measurement was ever wrong, only that one particular number chose not to travel.
Which Route Actually Fits What You're Doing
Wanting steps, sleep and heart rate to show up automatically in whatever else runs on the phone, with no ongoing effort, is a Health Connect job, and the proprietary gap is the accepted cost of the automation. Wanting one full copy of everything, for a backup or a genuine move away from Garmin, means requesting a Garmin Connect data export and planning for the day or two it takes to arrive, plus a parser for the FIT files if the CSV summaries are not enough on their own.
Wanting a searchable history of pace, power and heart rate inside a training platform, or a coach who reads that platform rather than Garmin Connect, points at a sync partner authorized through Garmin's own developer program, with a quick check of which wellness fields that particular integration actually lists before assuming one showed up. Running more than one of these at once is normal rather than a mistake.
